Human Parasitology, Second Edition, provides succinct coverage of the ways that human parasites illustrate myriad aspects of the biology of parasitism. Intended for a one-semester course, this thoroughly revised text includes updated references to primary research, new chapters on parasites that afflict AIDS patients, new illustrations, and coverage of emerging and increasingly important parasites such as Cryptosporidium and Cyclospora. Intended to appeal to a wide variety of students in the health professions, as well as to biology students in related disciplines, this comprehensive yet compact book will be useful as a reference both in and out of class.

About the Author
Burton J. Bogitsh received his undergraduate education in biology at New York University (University Heights) and his graduate education at Baylor University (M.A.) and the University of Virginia (Ph.D.). He is currently Professor Emeritus of Biological Sciences at Vanderbilt University. He has authored more than 100 publications in the area of parasitology and has co-authored a textbook in General Zoology. He is an associate editor of the Journal of Morphology, co-editor of Volume 2 of the Microscopical Anatomy of Invertebrates, and has contributed many chapters to numerous edited volumes on parasitology. His research interests are in the ultrastructural localization of enzymes in helminths with a primary focus on the digestive tracts of trematodes.

Dr. Carter received his B.A. and M.A. degrees in biology at Loma Linda University and his Ph.D. degree at the University of California at Los Angeles. He is currently a Professor Biological Sciences at Vanderbilt University. He has authored more than 70 publications with a primary focus on the biochemistry and immunology of parasites. He has contributed chapters in several edited volumes such as The Biology of the Tapeworm, Hymenolepis diminuta, and has served on the editorial board of the Journal of Parasitology. His current research interests are centered on the host-parasite interactions of the causative agent of Chagas’ disease, Trypanosoma cruzi.

This "Human Parasitology" text provides a balanced introductory view, as it concerned the interactive association between various parasites and their hosts. Its concise and reader-friendly format is a big plus: as it ensured that anyone who reads it will understand the message.
This book is clinically relevant. Its carefully selected contents were designed in such a way that will appeal to students of Zoology, Medicine, Veterinary medicine, Microbiology, Medical laboratory science, and Agriculture.
Discussed in details are various intestinal parasites like: Nematodes, Cestodes, and Trematodes. It also took care of many pathogenic protozoa like: Plasmodium and Entamoeba species. And, there are well-written chapters, which thoroughly analyzed both the Laboratory Diagnosis of Parasitic Diseases and the capabilities of various Antiparasitic Agents.

this book helped me get an A in my parasitology class! is a great book and very easy to read. unfortunately, there aren't many pictures that are in color. but, regardless, i would highly recommend this book for anyone taking parasitology!

In 1805 the tribe welcomed the Lewis and Clark expedition, who remarked on their intelligence, hospitality, and the natural abundance of their land. A peaceful coexistence with the few white explorers, trappers, and missionaries abruptly ended in 1860 when the discovery of gold precipitated a rush of thousands to north central Idaho. Somewhat crazed by the dreams of instant wealth, the adventurers took little heed that they were invading the Indians' land and breaking U.S. treaties. Among the accounts is a rare Nez Perce description by Sam Lott (Many Wounds) of the 1862 murder of two Nez Perce by white miners. Dennis Baird and his colleagues scoured the country and collected the existing firsthand accounts of that time of very rapid change. White officials, officers, missionaries, and journalists were lucid, compassionate, and surprisingly in favor of the Nez Perce. However, the prevailing national attitude toward Indians supported the wholesale "taking" of Indian land, which led to the disastrous Nez Perce Treaty of 1863 and greatly downsized their reservation.

Everyone Should Read This Book

Chances are you have been the victim of a psychopath. A boyfriend or girlfriend who used and abused you, someone who sold you a bill of goods, robbed you, or otherwise manipulated you. They are only one or two percent of the population but they really get around. If I had read this book years ago I might have avoided years of pain. At least I would have seen it coming and could have chosen to avoid it. This book should be required reading before graduating from high school.

Our Daughter married one and it has made our entire family dysfunctional ever since. People that are in a love relationship with these psychopath's/sociopath's/narcissists don't see how ugly they truly are because they are so easily manipulated at the very beginning of the relationship. These wolves don't add to ones life but rather they enjoy the challenge to destroy ones life.
If you start loosing family and friends because you protect this kind of person then you know you are in the hands of a destroyer. Run, run away and don't look back. Nothing good is inside of them. They are the perfect pretenders and will lie, cheat and steal anything to carry on their miserable lives and cover up who and what they really are. They will turn the tables on loved ones to perpetuate their behaviors.
Unfortunately, we have lost our daughter and grandchildren because we as loving parents asked questions and wanted to know more so were a threat to his hold on her. She is still after 8 years, unaware that those who really love her and care about her, that tried to protect her were not the problem. She just became his mini me and is sadly just like him now. Echo is her name now.
Intelligent people such as our beautiful daughter are the most duped by these kinds of personality's because the more intelligent one is, the more they think they would know they are in a terrible relationship and so don't see the signs coming.
Teach you children street smarts to see through the traps these psychopaths set before it gets started.
I wish we had known about Sociopaths/Psychopaths before he came into our loving family home. They are so good at putting out the fishing line and reeling in the bait that I don't know if we could have helped our daughter at the very beginning because she had just come out of a bad relationship, prayed for the next man to be her one and only and believed she had answered prayer. Instead, by us being so unaware of him being a psychopath, we unknowingly played into his trap also in the beginning until we saw warning signs.
Read about them before you encounter them to know what you are up against. These (people) term used loosely, are actually vicious predators. They are the real wolves in sheep's clothing and they truly are after your blood! Learn all you can about them or you might loose many years until you wake up and realize that you were only a pawn for their unsaleable appetite to look good on the outside to the world while the inside is really just pure evil wanting to eat your soul.

The word "classic" is often overused, and seldom applied accurately.

The term will do in this case, however. "Swords Against Death" is a classic of the genre. Immensely entertaining, enjoyable, pithy, droll and just plain fun could be used every bit as interchangeably as 'classic' and still hit the mark.

With passages such as "After all, girls had a way of blotting out all lesser, but not thereby despicable, delights. Girls were for dessert.", how could one see this collection of stories as anything other than a masterpiece of the highest order? Perhaps if one were no fan of fantasy, but only in that rare instance. Otherwise, a careful reader would still take great delight in Leiber's phrasing, rhythm, word selection, vocabulary, structure and use of language in general.

To think that so many of Leiber's works remain ahead of me... I can hardly contain my eagerness.

Wonderful Tales; Kindle edition has a formatting issue

Fritz Leiber (hereinafter referred to as The Master) invented Sword & Sorcery. Read him. (Not just the Swords series, everything!)

The fighting is believable. Laughs and perils abound. They fit best into the weird horror category.

The Master's work influenced many others: His city Lankhmar - which was inspried by Los Angeles - inspired Terry Pratchett's Ankh-Morpork - which was also inspired by London. Michael Chabon's "Gentlemen of the Road" is a direct steal.

The KIndle edition has a problem with font size. I normally use a mid-level font size when I read on my Kindles. When I opened this book, the font was too teeny to read! I had to use almost the biggest font to be able to read it!

I recently rediscovered the Fafhrd & the Gray Mouser series, and I couldn't be happier that I did. Superbly written, totally enjoyable fantasy romps with two unforgettable characters. Strongly recommended. Some of the content is SLIGHTLY "racy" - about like a PG-13 movie nowadays.

Excellent for Adult Beginner!

Once I got my hands on this book, I discarded all the other "beginner" books I'd purchased. No more having to play juvenile ditties like Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star.

I'm an adult beginner violinist and Essential Elements 2000 for Strings with its accompanying CD & DVD has enabled me to teach myself how to play my violin while thoroughly enjoying the effort and without experiencing the boredom and humiliation of having to learn tunes better geared toward much younger students.

I've only been playing since July and I'm already about to graduate to the second book in the series. The curriculum is interesting, playing along with the orchestra on the CD is exciting, and realizing how fast I'm progressing is a dream come true for this 54 year old beginner.

I highly recommend this book as well as Alfred's Essentials of Music Theory Complete to anyone seriously interested in learning violin.

Well thought out series.

"For a real violin study, go with Suzuki." While that might work for a child that is ages 3-4 in a one-on-one or small group setting (which is what the Suzuki Method was intended for), it does not work well in large group learning situation for kids who are twice that age, beginning instruments in fourth and fifth grade. And to be honest, almost everything in the Suzuki method *IS* an arrangement of an original work (like the Bach Bouree from the cello suites set for violin), chosen because even in their simplified form they help teach the fundamental concepts.

This is my third year using EE2000 in my school program. I usually have between 30-40 students at each grade level in the orchestra. The books and their accompanying CD/DVD work really well and are of the appropriate complexity for the students ages nine through eleven. As a private instructor myself, I recommend to all my students to seek outside instruction, but EE2000 provides a good balance of technical development with ensemble skills for the beginners. Students coming into my program who already play don't feel bored because I am able to append more complex tasks in bowing and fingering to them using the existing material, giving them helpful exercises to expand their current abilities, while they help in encouraging their beginning peers.

Lastly, a smart child, if they are so motivated (as some of my kids are), can look at the directives in the EE2000 book and figure out a lot of things on their own ahead of the class, and they are provided with just enough information to accomplish those tasks fairly correctly, without doing awful things to their technique. The included instruction videos are very helpful in this case as well. This is not true with most other methods (and the Suzuki books are entirely useless without a proper instructor!).

Don't get me wrong; I was a Suzuki student myself for my first few years of playing and from time to time use some of their excellent pieces in my own private teaching (although I primarily teach advanced junior high through college age players). However, it has its target audience, which is entirely different from that which EE2000 and others like it are designed for.

excellent violin method

This is an excellent first book for the violin. I have started learning violin again after a 24 year break! This book is aesthetic, has very clear instructions and diagrams and is designed beautifully. The progression of the exercises is completely logical, allowing you to perfect each technique before moving on. Every symbol is explained clearly, no new note or technique is found in exercises that come before their explanation. There are numerous scale and arpeggio exercises that are marked with a different background color, making it easier to find them. There are many orchestra arrangements (mostly duets), and even a duet with piano accompaniment. The accompanying discs are an added attraction. I don't particularly make very much use of them, but they can make practicing more interesting for children who generally have less discipline. This is a much better series than The ABCs of Violin.
