I am taking a Educational Measurement class this semester and so far I have found this textbook to be a thorough and relevent guide to the class that I am in.

Textbook for a class

This book was purchased for a summer class. The book was well organized and seemed to fit the purpose pretty well. My favorite thing is the indepth summaries at the end of the chapters. This provided a good way for the students to focus on the important information.

Good book to have

This is a good book. I was required to buy it for a educational measurement class and found this book to be very helpful. I reference this book throughout the year when I am teaching. This books gives you guidelines on how to write questions (i.e. multiple choice, matching, fill in the black questions, etc). The authors also teach you the calculations to determine if a test question you have created was reasonable or too easy or too difficult. I bought this book last summer, 2012, and have been using it since then.

Much-needed comprehensive theory of rationality

"The Architecture of Reason" is a well-respected work that is somewhat unique in the current philosophic literature. Most works on rationality focus on one of two aspects - (a) epistemology and theoretical reason, concerned with justification and its connection to knowledge, or (b) practical reason, largely the subject matter of meta-ethics and moral psychology. Perhaps because of the different natures of the two fields, and the divergence in the literature, relatively few authors write with an appreciation for both.

Robert Audi, who moved from Nebraska to take the Business Ethics chair at Notre Dame shortly after writing this book, is one of the few philosophers with a deep understanding of both fields and the fascinating connections between them. This is a work dedicated to exploring the structural parallels between the theoretical and practical spheres of reason, how they are similar, and how they are different. Audi advocates an internalist view, based in what he calls a moderate, flexible foundationalism.

The work is divided into eight chapters, each roughly 30 pages in length. Chapters 1-2 provide an overview of Audi's view of theoretical reason, while chapters 3-6 detail the structural parallels between theoretical reason and practical reason, as well as the basis of concepts such as reasonableness and altruism. Chapter 7 provides an extremely insightful and detailed discussion of relativity in various forms (a concept to often bandied about without precision, even in philosophy). Chapter 8 concludes with a discussion of the global characteristics of a rational person, and how rationality can be viewed as something like a virtue concept.

All in all, this is a detailed and well-argued work that can act as an advanced introduction to the topics (especially for those with some background in philosophy, but perhaps only a light background in epistemology), but also is an important original contribution in its own right. It is also the only major work dedicated to a holistic treatment of both sides of rationality in contemporary philosophy, to my knowledge.

A definite maybe...

Having taken the better part of this last semester reading this book, I find myself with no strong inclination to rate this book in any particular direction.
As far as content goes it's rather thorough, Audi does manage to give a complete bottom up view of rationality. But, as he gets into the later stages of the book where the topic turns to ethical issues he gets a little presumptuous. Another issue I had was with Audi's homemade words. I recognize the fact that certain areas of philosophy have created their own technical nomenclature but some of his words are a bit of a stretch even for my liberal mind. Further, while not as hard to read as many other philosophy texts this was by no means a pleasure read, and if it had not been required reading I would have opted for more pleasurable tasks such as watching paint dry.
If you have a background in philosophy or epistemology (or are disposed to masochistic habits) I suggest you buy this book. After all, Audi does pull together his entire theory of rationality into one book, and this is no easy feat for anyone. But for those of you unaccustomed to technical, poorly written (for most philosophers, not to point a finger solely at Audi) philosophy texts, I say find an easier to read introductory book somewhere else.

Decent if you must have a care plan book, needs more details

This book is fairly easy to use. I like the layout, but it is not as great when it comes to going over nursing interventions. It is extremely choppy and short. Before I purchased this book I looked high and low for a differnt care plan book more like the one I had purchased for nursing 101 class by Meg Gulanick and Judith Meyers, but alas! They have not published one! I finally settled on this Nursing Care plan book. This has helped me develop my own care plans for patients, but as I stated it is not as detailed as one would have hoped (when it came to rationales for each action or intervention and descriptions for the why you could choose this nanda diagnosis, and even separating out the types of interventions which mu NU 101 care plan book did). I do wish it were available for kindle, lugging yet another large book to clinicals was not pleasant. If you are looking for a care plan book for your OB class, this one is decent, but I am sure there are better more detailed care plans available online just by using google.

A textbook actually worth the money.

The condition of the book I received was definitely used (there is a glittery pink sticker stuck to the back, still there because I think it adds character), but not as terribly as many of my other textbooks are. This is such a great book, not just for a psychology class. I especially love how there are quotes in the margins that go along well with the topics being covered. Although the activities in the end of each section are long, the chapters are fun, neatly organized, and I actually can't wait to get to my reading assignments.
If you're taking a psychology class and this text book is required, its definitely worth it; no matter if its new or used. This book is definitely worth the price I purchased it for and although I hope I can keep it well after this term is finished, I would also love to give it to someone else so they can enjoy it as much as I do.

Great book but would have been better spiral bound

I had to get this book for my Human Relations course. It is very informative. Written to understand. I have just started with this course , so i can't give a complete overall answer. However, so far, it has been great, and makes you think and evaluate yourself. One thing i do not like, it comes only as a paperback. A workbook like this should be spiral bound . this would make it a lot easier.

Medea's revenge is a lifetime of suffering

Medea by Euripedes was a play I chose for my 2015 reading challenge. The play, with only 47 pages took about 1/2 hour to read. My first thought was.....doesn't the woman on the cover look like Salma Hayek?

The play centers around Medea, a goddess who falls madly in love, emphasis on MADLY, with Jason. She gives up everything for this man. We're talking killing, stealing, betraying her father and home, the whole kitten caboodle. She has 2 sons by him then one day, bang........homeboy hooks up with this younger chick, leaves Medea and the kids and marries this home-wrecker. Say what???? Say it isn't so........ oh, it's so!

To put icing on the cake, this home-wrecker's daddy (Creon) banishes her from the land. Allowed to stay one more day she plots her revenge and baby she went for it. Unfortunately her revenge is an act that would cost a lifetime of suffering not only her husband but herself as well.

Medea, although a quick read, is very powerful. You will agree with Medea and understand her pain but will hate her for her decisions. Jason is a loser who tries to convince Medea that what he was doing was for a good reason. Let me tell you something, no one (woman) in there right mind would believe it. What's interesting is the mentality of both individuals. Medea was not afraid to show her emotions, whether sadness, fear or anger but Jason remained calmed and had no hatred towards her. She screamed at him, called him names, yet he thought they could still remain friends until the end.

With no idea what this play was about or how it would turn out. I'm glad I chose it.

About the Author
Greg Nellis is an Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. Professor Nellis received his MS and PhD at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Professor Nellis is a member of ASHRAE, ASME, IIR and CSA and carries out applied research that is related to energy systems with a focus on refrigeration technology. Professor Nellis has published more than 40 journal papers. Professor Nellis's focus has been on graduate and undergraduate education and he has received the Polygon and Pi Tau Sigma awards for excellence in teaching.

Professor Klein is the Bascom Ouweneel Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. He has been on the faculty at Wisconsin since 1977. He is associated with the Solar Energy Laboratory and has been involved in many studies of solar and other types of energy systems. He is the author or co-author of more than 150 publications relating to the analysis of energy systems. Professor Klein's current research interests are in solar energy systems and applied thermodynamics and heat transfer. In addition, he is also actively involved in the development of engineering computer tools for both instruction and research. He is the primary author of a modular simulation program (TRNSYS), a solar energy system design program (F-CHART), a finite element heat transfer program (FEHT) and a general engineering equation solving program (EES). Professor Klein is a Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME); the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration, and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE); and the American Solar Energy Society (ASES).

Best Textbook I've Ever Owned

I've had a lot of good, bad, and everything in between when it comes to text books. This book is by far one of the best if not the best I have owned.

Reading it makes you feel like the author is sitting down and talking with you, from simple concepts to complex derivations. It can get very technical for all the people that like to read between the lines and learn the complex theory and proofs, but at the same time it has many examples and applicable information as well if you like to skip the complex jargon and get to solving problems.

This is one of the few engineering text books I have actually completed all the reading for the course. I liked it so much, I read chapters we didn't even study.

It can be used for an introductory heat transfer course as well as an advanced course. They actually layout which chapters would cover different types of courses. Usually we would read the first half of a chapter and then the very advanced stuff would come in for Masters students or motivated type.

It also makes a lot of use out of the software program EES with actual examples. It would be very difficult to solve some of the complex problems without a simultaneous equation solver such as EES, especially problems that require iteration (LMTD problems for heat exchangers). They also do a good job of solving hand-written problems with step-by-step instructions (No, "how did they get that number?" issues for me).

Anyway, I highly recommend this book. I plan on buying their Thermodynamics text book when it is released since my old book was horrific. Also, the book looks like the Bible or something really important. Just a plain front and kind of short and fat, it will look good on your bookshelf.

a good heat transfer textbook

It's a very good heat transfer textbook. It's well written, readable, and very through. It can be pretty dense. It has a *lot* of good worked example problems and examples of how to use software packages like EES, Maple, and Matlab. The software examples are helpful especially because they show how to work all the way through tricky problems, not just details of how to use specific commands.

An exemplary work in engineering and heat transfer

This book is definitely the best textbook I have seen to date in heat transfer (Keep in mind that I have read books from Bejan, Cengel, Incropera, and Holaman). This review is intended to correct (in my opinion) an inaccurate statement made by one of the reviewers about this book:
I respect your opinion about the book not having enough real life examples, but come on..., we know that your statement is not valid at all. This book has the MOST real life examples in one textbooks and if you run into a heat transfer problem , chances that you will see an example that EXACTLY fits that problem is pretty high. How do you define real life examples? And what is your definition of it is important. Perhaps you were seeking for examples in another subject and could not find it? So don't blame it on this book. Also anyone who says the software used in the textbook is all EES and so forth... Have you ever paid some attention to computer programming as an engineer? I mean again ,,, come on, If you read a code for one specific software, you should be able to apply that to any software of your choice. It's really that simple. Plus I strongly believe that having the code not only helps you with the coding of it necessarily, but it helps you think logical through the problem statement and the solution provided by that assignment.
In the end, I strongly recommend this book and I hope to see this textbook in all universities across the nation pretty soon. The only in depth analysis of a subject in engineering...

Greg Tang's proven methods--giving kids tools rather than rules and more memorization--pay off once again, as he uses rhymes and commonsense tricks to walk through the multiplication tables from zero to 10. For example, if you know how to multiply by two ("Two is very fast and fun, quickly double and you're done. What's that you say, be more precise? Okay then, just add it twice!"), then fours ("... please just always double twice!") and eights ("... doubling three times works just great!") should be a cinch. Some of the rhymes are even as clever as Tang's tips: Over a panda pool game, he advises, "Nine is faster to compute if at first you overshoot. Here's a very clever tack, do 10 times and then subtract! What is 9 x 9? It's ten 9's minus 9.... What is 9 x 7? It's ten 7's minus 7."

Tang's text makes for a fun read-along, and illustrator Harry Briggs keeps things interesting with his computer-generated, animal-inspired spreads, with dancing chickens, ice-cream-flinging monkeys, and a fortunetelling cat. Snappy rhymes and problems to solve, going from 0 to 10, with one number per spread, offer valuable strategies that will help develop number sense. However, some terms, such as thrice and precise, might require a bit of clarification. "Prime" is mentioned in relation to the number seven but not defined and not necessary for the strategy given. Briggs's humorous cartoon illustrations in bold, flat colors add to the book's appeal. Overall, this title would enhance math units and would be a fun read-aloud.

The Best Of Times - A Wonderful Resource!

As a teacher, this book is a wonderful resource because it does not promote the memorization of multiplication facts, but rather it teaches the reader to problem solve and that there are different ways to approach a problem. As the title suggests, it is full of 'strategies' - when students attempt a mathematical problem of any sort, you want them to have a bank of strategies to draw from. This book is ideal for that. My students enjoyed the playful rhymes, almost musical in a way, as well as the bright, vibrant illustrations of all of Tang's books. Tang has a wonderful way of making math "make sense" for kids. Two thumbs up!

Not for kids who are struggling to learn their facts!

I bought this book thinking it might help my daughter learn her multiplication facts. However, for the strategies explained in this book to help, you'd have to be a math whiz, and also know a fair number of multiplication facts to begin with. For example, this is the strategy for multiplying by 6: "Six is pretty quick to do, just multiply by 3 then 2. If this sounds like too much trouble, triple first before you double!" (!!) Now, this might be handy if the book taught an easy way to triple, but the strategy for multiplying by 3 is: "Three is as easy as can be, if you triple what you see. In other words just add it thrice, this simply is one more than twice!" Simple, hunh? I would have given the book 1 star, but I liked the illustrations.

First: memorize the math facts. I recommend Learning Wrap Ups Multiplication Wrap Ups and daily practice. Second grade is the right time to start.

Then have fun with this book, that illustrates handy shortcuts and mental tricks for the times tables.
