About the Author

David Sumpter is a professor of applied mathematics at Uppsala University in Sweden, where he runs the Collective Behavior Research Group. Originally from London, he studied his Ph.D. in mathematics at Manchester and held academic research positions at both Oxford and Cambridge. This is his first book. He lives with his wife and two children. In his spare time, he trains a successful soccer team of nine-year-old boys. He lives in Uppsala, Sweden.

Science friendly

Great book! As someone who works on public health-epidemiology I'm used to statistical models, this book illustrate how soccer can be use as means of explaining this models as well as how it can enrich research in all areas. Is good in math and soccer level, is great to give you insights, particulary if you do research in any area or if you like soccer and wanna get into the somewhat cryptic math of its statistics in order to filter the bs from media expert. If you what you are looking for is "magic bullet" book for gambling, this won't be case.

Good to see it is not only the players having adventures in soccer!!

Very enjoyable read with a range of good information on the game and mathematical approaches to analysing parts of it. Of particular interest was the cross pollination of research into animals with football. The book was broken up into easily digestible chunks that held the interest from start to finish and were not overly academic in nature. The layers within each chunk were built up sequentially and left one thinking that one knew something of the process, the maths involved and the utility of the work at the end of the chunk.Interspersed with good elements of humility and humour I found it well written for the layman (me) and the depth there for budding mathematicians, football managers and researchers. Worth the cost of purchase for me. Looking forward to seeing more from this author.

Quick read, interesting concepts

I definitely liked the premise of the book, applying mathematic techniques to analyze soccer, and the author presented his work in an approachable manner. While I think the math presented was simple enough, I could have handled more and wish the book was a little more in depth.

About the Author

Crumb Sketchbook (10 volumes), R. Crumb Draws the Blues, The Book of Mr. Natural, The Book of Genesis Illustrated by R. Crumb, and many more. He lives in the south of France with his wife, the artist Aline Kominsky-Crumb.

very good collection, issues with seller

Pros:

Good stories, a great insight to historic comics of the 60's, and a nice thing for any comic collector to own

Cons:

Pages printed out of order(At least for my copy)

Pages 17 and 18 are switched, even though the numbers are in the right order. My only guess is that the numbers were printed before hand, and they printed the comic on the wrong side of each page. If I can get this resolved quickly, I'll boost it to a 5 star rating.

Retrospect

Reading Fritz the Cat after so many years, I was struck by how misogynistic and creepy R. Crumb is. There are some aspects of the stories that accurately reflect the time period, the drawings are still brilliant of course, and there is no arguing the influence Crumb has had on our culture in general. Having said that, Crumb no longer holds the seat of honor in my heart that he once did.

I am very pleased with my purchase of But Is It Art? The book was in great shape, as advertised, and I am so glad that it was both very affordable and easy to purchase. Cynthia Freeman, the author, makes the concept of art, from a culturally educated perspective, refreshingly accessible. As she writes to bring the reader along on her logical and interesting journey, it becomes understandable that this is what any form of art is: the creator's journey. Thus, Ms. Freeman succeeds at either introducing or reintroducing the idea that art remains, however strange or even horrific that it gets, an invitation to relate to aspects of reality through creative means.

Engaging and accessible

Freeland's easy prose and organizational structure make this book a quick, fun, and insightful read into art-historical-philosophies with a brief look at Classical Greeks like Plato and Aristotle, a good look at the works of Kant, and a survey of contemporary philosophers and art critics book-ended and interspersed with looks at artworks and just enough context to make sense of their place in the timeline.

Though Karnow claims that U.S. imperialism in its former colony, the Philippines, has been "uniquely benign" compared to European colonialism, the evidence set forth in this colorful, briskly readable history undercuts that prognosis. He shows that a succession of U.S. presidents and administrators coddled the archipelago's 60 or so ruling families, perpetuating the feudal oligarchy that continues to this day, and widening the gap between rich and poor. Karnow, whose Vietnam: A History is a standard account of the American venture in Southeast Asia, draws intriguing parallels: the U.S.-Philippine war of 1898, much like the Vietnam experience, dehumanized U.S. troops, who looted and annihilated villages; ex-President Marcos, like South Vietnamese ruler Diem, presented Washington with the problem of how to deal with a client state that squandered its credibility. In Karnow's assessment, the "new prosperity" under Corazon Aquino has not touched the Filipino countryside or slums. Photos. Author tour.

Philippine history is often described as 300 years in a (Spanish) convent and 50 years in Hollywood. Karnow, who worked for 30 years as a journalist in Asia, narrates the careers of several individuals who influenced the Philippines. His treatment of the indecisiveness of President McKinley over the issue of empire and of the egotistical General MacArthur make the work a definite purchase for libraries. Weaker in treatment is the post-independence period, where Karnow concentrates upon Marcos and Aquino, both of whom he knows. Particularly revealing is his account of the White House coming to terms with the Aquino election victory. Those who love swashbuckling history will enjoy this work.

Sobering Case Study of Exporting America

From the valiant death of Ferdinand Magellan in the azure surf of Mactan in 1521 to the fall of Ferdinand Marcos at the hands of Cory Aquino and a disillusioned Reagan administration in 1986, Stanley Karnow, the venerable Asian correspondent for the Washington Post, traces the arc of the Philippines' long, tumultuous relationship with the West. Briskly-paced and engaging, "In Our Image" won the 1990 Pulitzer-prize for history and presents a balanced, yet sobering perspective on America's only traditional colonial experience.
Those looking for anti-American or anti-imperialist fodder will be sorely disappointed by Karnow's generally positive assessment of US policies in the archipelago. He praises the massive investment made in developing and improving the indigenous education system and industrial infrastructure, and frequently notes that American policies were far less exploitative and more politically liberal than any other colonial administration in history. Indeed, he argues that the Washington's voluntary grant of independence to the Philippines was nothing short of revolutionary at the time, and that the islands were actually more subject to American domination after independence in 1946 than before.
On the other hand, those seeking inspiration in how American democracy and industry can be successfully exported to different cultures will be equally disappointed with this case study. Most politicians today, liberal and conservative alike, bristle at the notion that some people or cultures are simply incapable of American-style democracy, and the freedom and justice that comes with it. Karnow, however, makes a strong case that dreams of self-duplication in the Philippines were doomed to fail in a society with an entrenched oligarchy, a powerful tradition of compadre loyalty, and an inherent respect for unabridged power. He notes, for instance, that both Marcos and his prime political opponent, the martyred Benigno Aquino, believed that only an all-powerful head of state in the mold of Singapore's Lee Kuan Yew or South Korea's Syngman Rhee would be capable of making any positive difference in the Philippines.
Karnow is a brilliant writer and this book shows him at his best. Each chapter covers large swaths of American and Filipino history, so the narrative is far from comprehensive. Those seeking a detailed understanding of US colonial administration, the bloody and controversial fight against Aquinaldo and the Filipino insurgents, or the epic tale of the Bataan death march and MacArthur's reconquest of the Philippines would be well-advised to seek other, more focused works. However, for an introduction to the political history of the Philippines, her close and unusual relationship with the United States, and the experience of re-creating American institutions in lands unlike our own, this book is not to be missed.

Very Worthwhile Read....But

I enjoyed the book and would recommend it for anyone with ties or a general curiosity about the Philippines. I've been married to a Filipina for six years and thought it would be good to know more about her culture and homeland. The book served this purpose well. My only complaint is that the author allowed his opinions too much representation. The book is of course his interpretation of US/Filipino history and so one would expect it to have his personal slant but I would have been appreciative if it had been inserted less forcefully so as to not distract me from the narrative. Besides that shortcoming and that the book is a bit dated now, I thought it very worthy of four stars.

Gripping stories with good science

The jargon of diseases can be boring, tedious. There are a lot of acronyms and big words. Worse, we often don't know as much as we'd like -- and usually we aren't very certain of what we do know. Telling a good story given those constraints is hard. But Spillover repeatedly provides gripping stories that still impart a good understanding of what we know about zoonotic (animal-origin) diseases. Even better, the author ties disparate stories together to describe some general trend and possible causes for seemingly new infectious diseases. But I don't want to summarize the conclusions: I want you to go read it. You won't be bored and you'll learn a lot (most definitely even if you've read books like The Hot Zone or the Coming Plague).

Some other notes:
* The author has a less human-centric attitude and a lot of sympathy for the animals, like horses or apes, who sometimes are actually the first animal a disease spills over into only to later infect humans.
* He has a wry tone. When noting the euthanasia of a large number of monkeys (even ones likely not infected with a disease), he notes no humans were euthanized despite equal exposure.
* He provides full references. Some of those papers are quite readable by a non-expert such as this review ([...]) of the importance of bats as reservoirs for infectious diseases.
* The stories are often told from the perspective of the scientists trying to figure out what the heck is really going on. The author is also not afraid to explain when scientists just don't know -- and how they might figure it out more.
* The author went on several field collections where he might have been exposed to a disease being investigated.

If I had any criticisms I would have two:

* The author notes the problem of calling African hunted wild meat "bush meat" which has unsavory connotations to many Europeans and Americans despite Europeans and Americans also hunting wild animals for food. And then he still calls it that repeatedly for the rest of the book (hunted animals are a major source for new infections). I realize this makes it easier to read but it was a bit jarring.
* There is a long, imagined story in the chapters on the origin HIV that is, essentially, imagined entirely with details about a possible river fisherman who gets infected with HIV early on and brings it downstream to the (then) Belgian capitol of the Congo. Elsewhere in the book when the explanation for the origin of a disease required some imagination to fill in a plausible sequence of events, the imaginary stories were a lot less elaborate. I don't think the story detracts from the accuracy of the book: something like that had to have happened to explain the origin of HIV (specifically HIV-1). I was also perfectly entertained and learned a bit about the cultures in the region, but it stood out. It might annoy some so I note you can safely skip ahead when you hit it.

I call these two things out, but even so the book is still excellent. I have some interesting papers I want to read. I also feel I know more about how infectious diseases "work". Best of all, I am less fearful of them as well.

Spillover: Animal Infections and the Next Human Pandemic

I have a science background but not in the biological sciences. Over the years I have followed much of the discussions about HIV/AIDS, SARS, and other outbreaks of infectious diseases in the popular press without being able to put it all together. This book provides that overall view and a status report on our efforts to deal with this ongoing threat. In a few spots there may be more technical information than many may want but it is presented in a way that allows one to move past it without losing the thread of the discussion. The book provides a description of the work done by the professionals on the front line and challenges they face. This is an important subject that we all should all be aware of. The book is well worth reading.

Excellent, Vital, Gripping Book

I can't recommend this book highly enough. Quammen's writing is vivid yet measured, detailed yet gripping, and he possesses true talent as a narrative non-fiction writer. His ability to explain complex scientific ideas and processes in layman's terms is fantastic, and made this book such a joy to read. Though pandemic disease is often written about in ways that are hysterical and melodramatic, SPILLOVER is not a fear-mongering book.

I also deeply appreciated Quammen's awareness of the animals involved, and his respect and empathy for them. It's subtle but ever-present in his choice of language describing them.

I hope this book is assigned in high schools-- it was so inspiring it made me wish I could do my undergraduate schooling over again and become a scientist.
