Mankind Beyond Earth offers a wide-ranging analysis of the challenges facing human space exploration. Using examples from polar expeditions, aviation history, undersea voyages, and space missions, Claude A. Piantadosi shows that exploration is unforgiving to those who fail to plan. Piantadosi details the barriers that must be surmounted for humans to leave Earth for long voyages. He supports his case with information from diverse disciplines, including microbiology, radiation physics, botany, astronomy, and physiology. He also makes a strong argument for the United States to refocus on exploring the Moon and to use Moon exploration both for scientific discovery and as preparation for longer trips to Mars.

About the Author

Claude A. Piantadosi MD is professor and director of the F. G. Hall Environmental Laboratory at Duke University. Educated at the University of North Carolina–Chapel Hill and the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, he trained in undersea medicine and saturation diving in the U.S. Navy and in respiratory physiology and pulmonary medicine at Duke. He spent thirty years as a resource consultant to NASA. He is an author of more than three hundred scientific papers and The Biology of Human Survival: Life and Death in Extreme Environments.

A brilliant and fascinating science lesson, loosely organized around space exploration

I loved this book, but you may not. The author is a scientist of broad interest who tells you much more than you need to know to weigh alternative ideas for exploring outer space. For example, there are four ways to die from lack of oxygen and the book gives concise but thorough descriptions of the physiology of each one. Someday an astronaut may have a heart attack (ischemia) in space, or die from cytotoxic or stagnant hypoxia due to disease or genetic defect. But you'd think a book on space travel would concentrate on not having oxygen because space is a vacuum and other planets don't have oxygen atmospheres and maybe your spaceship or spacesuit sprang a leak or your oxygen recycling system broke down (hypoxic hypoxia, if you’re keeping track). The book has a similarly comprehensive account of how radiation affects tissues instead of describing only the most significant short-term dangers of cosmic rays outside the Van Allen belt.

It’s not just physiology that gets this treatment, the author will launch into general discussions of physics, chemistry, geology, scientific history or anything else that interests him with the least excuse. Ever wondered about how we got those International Geophysical and International Polar years? Or what the “Antarctic stare” is? Then this is the book for you. But if you’re looking for a focused discussion of the technology of space travel, you might get frustrated. Think of a late-night rambling discussion with a very smart guy who has thought a lot about exploration of outer space, who has a strong pedantic streak that is tolerable because he actually knows what he’s talking about and it’s interesting stuff.

Another feature of this book that will not be universally popular but that I liked, is the author has strong opinions and little patience for alternative views. Exploration means sending humans, and the only path worth considering is developing self-sustaining resources and capabilities like permanent low-Earth orbit facilities, a moon base, methodologies for extended living without resupply and mining, processing, reprocessing and disposal technologies to manage physical resources off-Earth. Space should be explored because that’s what humans do, and maybe a little for what we will learn, but it will not be valuable as a permanent place to live. You will learn why the author holds these opinions, but not much about why others may disagree (attractive ideas the author doesn’t wish to discuss are labeled “mind candy” and left at that).

The writing style is clear and vigorous, with a distinctive voice. My only gripe is the author is overfond of silly acronyms and tables that could use better design and any point at all. This is a book that will teach you a lot about a lot of things, and will be a pleasure to read for those who like to learn without worrying about whether there is any use to the learning.

An excellent mix of topics

I am a huge reader of science texts. I've read all the popular books and I like to delve into the less well known. I've honestly never heard of Professor Piantadosi nor have I read his work before.

The author looks at the history of space exploration and the barriers facing us in the future. As he says, space travel is not just about technology, it also about biology. He makes the point more than once that it is also about finances and politics. He starts off showing the passion of the people who made it to the moon and explains the difficulties they faced.

As we go through the book, he explains the importance of sustenance, waste removal, air for breathing, propulsion, distances, the effects of radiation on physiology and technology and so much more. Who will be the people exploring, what will they explore and how will they do it.

Some people may not like his style of writing. Like many scientific texts, it's written in a mostly informal essay style. While everything he says is related, he tends to jump around a bit. In the space of just a few pages, he explains the measurements we'll use in space (not just KM and light-year but AU and parsec), biomedicine, stress and the effects of radiation. Stuck in there is a great discussion of the people who live above 12,000 feet and how they have adapted to that life.

I say same people may not like it, but I found the entire thing to be fascinating. I've never seen some of the concepts explained as well as the author does it. There are a lot of topics I have never seen addressed for the layman.

This book is sort of like National Geographic for the Space Explorer. Maybe even a little popular mechanics thrown in for good measure. I really enjoyed it and recommend it to anyone who likes general space science. Give it a few chapters to decide whether nor not to finish. If you can make it to chapter 3, you'll have a good feel for his writing. I found it to be a bit quirky but, in the end, a great way to approach so many topics. Space travel really is complicated, more so than many people believe.

I passed my ASQ CQE & this book helped quite a bit! I'd purchased the CQI Primer first though it didn't have an index, so I bought this book also since it did (which was extremely helpful during the exam!!!). It also made for a valuable 2nd reference with a different take on the same info. What I liked about this book was that it was more thorough & more like a textbook then the Primer. Knowing what I know now, I would've purchased this book alone for the CQE exam.

Clancy Martin is Professor and Chair of Philosophy and Professor of Business Ethics in the Bloch School at the University of Missouri, Kansas City.

The late Robert C. Solomon was the Quincy Lee Centennial Professor of Business and Philosophy and Distinguished Teaching Professor at The University of Texas at Austin.

Too academic

As I presume this reader is intended to be used in business ethics and related applied ethics courses, I have to say it simply tries to cover too much. Featuring 115 articles and 89 "cases" (which can be used either for the purpose of homework or in-class assignments), this book endeavors too provide an overview of ethical problems and dilemmas that students might face in their prospective work environments. Integrating new material on technology, hedge funds and derivatives, and the future of the free market, this third edition of "Honest Work" updates the previous one by adding 16 new readings and 9 provocative new cases. "Honest Work" may be used for undergraduate, graduate, and executive business ethics courses, and by anyone who wants to think about the challenges involved in being good and doing well in business; however, it will most likely be used in undergraduate courses. The readings try to cover seemingly ALL aspects of business ethics, some of which are rather esoteric (e.g., the hip section on ethics and technology that begins with Locke on property??), under a puzzling (because business people typically think of the good life in very different, more rigid terms than academic philosophers) overarching theme of the good life -- what it means personally, what it means for business, and what it means for society.

Here's what's new to third edition of "Honest Work": More discussion questions have been added to each article and chapter to help provoke further conversation in the classroom; Ch. 11 on international business has been updated to reflect emerging ways of thinking about globalization; Ch. 15 on the future of the free market has been updated with discussions on the nature of the market and fairness in light of the financial crisis; Ch. 1, on ethics in the workplace, contains several new articles such as Harry J. Van Buren's "Boundaryless Careers and Employability Obligations," which address the problems of employment in a difficult and uncertain job market.

Despite the large number of "cases", I suspect that the majority of business students will not get much out of all this material. This is because the book is pervaded by the current specialization fetish that is sucking life out of the humanities and the academy more generally. "Applied" philosophical topics have become "hot" in recent years, where "hot" means desired by a small, cloistered, ivory tower, elitist, student-hating, tenure-worshipping culture, and "applied" means a genre distinguishable only by this small group for the purpose of having a new category of publications which, despite its moniker, has little or no actual relevance to their subjects or arguments being applied outside the classroom. As an example, like many business readers that purport to be "practical" (whatever that means), "Honest Work" has a section on the morality of insider trading. Isn't the very notion of "the morality of insider trading" quite odd? I say it's odd because it seems to me that in reality anyone who deliberates about insider trading doesn't do so on the basis of morality. Rather, their deliberation and what they ultimately do will be based mainly on the consequences of, and the professional and social stigmatization that comes with, VIOLATING THE LAW. Indeed, it seems to me that in practice it isn't a moral issue at all, and that morality won't even cross their minds. However, from the point of view of an academic whose job is just to think and write about these issues from a distance, it may appear to be a real moral issue; and an academic may rationalize that it is in fact a real moral issue if they need to beef up their CV for the purpose of a merit or tenure, or if they just need something to do. Of course the relationship between law and morality is a real philosophical question; but it's a more abstract, more speculative, more traditional philosophical question which, because it has these qualities, always gets divorced from these "applied" discussions.

At the end of the day, so many specialized topics are covered and the book contains so much information that, instead of appealing to a wide readership in the business community, it seems to me "Honest Work" will turn business people away and again appeal mainly to academics.

About the Author
A NASA research engineer by day, a pastry innovator by night, Jialin Tian developed a passion for making pastries while she was working on her doctoral dissertation in satellite instrumentation. Since then, the art of pastry making has brought her endless enjoyment. She has studied pastry and chocolate art with world-renowned pastry chefs Stéphane Glacier, M.O.F., Jean-Pierre Wybauw, Stéphane Leroux, M.O.F., Franck Michel, M.O.F., and Ramon Morató, at the French Pastry School in Chicago and PreGel Professional Training Center in Concord, North Carolina. She is the author of Macaron Magic, Macaron Magic 2: Individual Desserts and Showpieces, and The Bear and Fish Family Cookbook. She is currently an electro-optical systems engineer at NASA Langley Research Center in Virginia. Jialin received her BS and MS degrees in electrical engineering from North Carolina State University and Purdue University, respectively. She received her PhD in electrical and computer engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 2004. She lives in Yorktown, Virginia.

Outstanding choux pastries, tour de force!

This book is an excellent and comprehensive guide to choux pastries. It has all of my
favorite classics --eclair, cream puff, religieuse, etc. The contemporary choux pastries
are trendy and elegant world-class creations! I love the creativity and modern pastry
techniques shown in this book as well as the author's scientific approach. The choux
characters are just purely fun!

The recipes are written in great details with precise instructions, and the illustrative
photos make complicated procedure seem so approachable. I made caramel eclairs, Paris
Brest, and olive oil pizza choux; absolutely marvelous!! I am ready for more challenging
creations...maybe a tempting choux tart. The pastry photos are mesmerizing works of
art...very avant garde! Over all, a must-have for everyone who loves French pastries!

My absolute favorite!!

The author is so talented and generous. I love all of her books, but this one is my absolute favorite! Stunning photographs, details detailed step-by-step instructions with photos, and a short intro on the history and her creative thoughts of each pastry. What more could you ask for? I tried the blueberry and meyer lemon eclairs, they were out of this world! The doughnuts are simple to make and my family ate them faster than I could make them. The videos on her website are very helpful as well, so be sure to watch them first!

A loving, thorough portrait

You can sense the quality of this massive book before you even open it. The Buzz Lightyear image is a cutout piece of glossy paper, which is set into bright green fabric. The title appears on a translucent paper banner. The back of the book matches the front, except the cutout is of the back side of Buzz. Inside, a black satin ribbon is attached to use as a bookmark.

Fancy treatment indeed, but the text and images live up to it.

The text is thorough and well written, and sprinkled with dozens of interviews with key Pixar people, including Ed Catmull, Steve Jobs and John Lasseter. It's accompanied by hundreds of examples of concept art, photographs, storyboards and fully rendered film images. Everything Pixar is covered, starting with the ten formative years before "Toy Story" (including Lasseter's firing by the Disney Company), through Pixar's acquisition by Disney in 2006.

I especially liked the photographs of voice talent (Ellen DeGeneres, Tom Hanks, Tim Allen) taken during recording sessions, and the many behind-the-scenes stories about making the movies. In one, John Lasseter describes how funny Tom Hanks was recording the "Toy Story" scene in which Woody tries to use Buzz's arm as a stand-in for the depressed Space Ranger: " I was laughing so hard, I almost ruined the take," Lasseter remembered. "I had to leave the room and go into the recording booth with the sound engineer."

This book is so full of story

This is the latest collection to my Pixar artbook. Almost immediately, I wrapped the book up to protect the cover from the elements. The bright green cover is made of cloth-like fabric and attracts dust easily. After picking it from my desk from photographing it, some parts of the cover had already became dirty!

Old school photos, high resolution renders, great writing filled the pages made of high quality paper stock.

It tells the history of Pixar animation studios before there was Pixar animation studios, all the way up to the Disney bought-over. It stops just right before Ratatouille or there would probably be more written on Brad Bird. You'll find the true meaning of passion, determination and the love for their art.

If you've owned other Pixar artbooks, you'll be pleased to note that there are quite a lot of new, never-been-printed photos in the book. You're going to see tons of new images.

Are You an Otherish Giver?

I've been reading this book for a few days now - finished it yesterday - and I am already finding myself changing a bit of how I operate. According to the book, I am usually a matcher - one who gives reciprocally, when I figure I can receive in return. And there isn't much wrong with that. But, according to Adam Grant and his bevy of research, otherish givers are usually the most successful.

So, let me explain.

There are three broad styles of interpersonal dealing: taking, matching, and giving. Takers are those who try to take more than they give. Matchers are those who try to give and take proportaionally and conditionally. Givers are those who give more than they take. Takers are primarily self-oriented, matchers are other-oriented as a means to being self-oriented (I'll help you when I think you will help me) and givers are primarily other-oriented.

Here's the counter-intuitive part. If we look at the most successful people - the happiest, the most likely to be promoted, etc - they are generally givers, and if we look at the least successful, they too often tend to be givers. (Takers do moderately well, but over time, few want to deal with them. Matchers do okay too.)

This book is an attempt to explain why being a giver is a good 'strategy' for success, as well as under what conditions giving is a failing 'strategy.' First, the positive: simply put, people appreciate givers and giving often makes people want to give back. Since givers help others and often put others' needs as a priority, givers often garner (without deliberately trying - AND THAT IS KEY!) a network of support from others they've helped. Want to communicate most effectively? Ask more questions to others than you give answers, ask for advice, and be aware of how you can help others. Want to bring out the best in people around you? Believe in them by recognizing and appreciating their strengths and contributions. Want to be successful? Don't think of personal relations as zero-sum games (where others can only win to the degree you lose), but positive sum games (if you win, it doesn't mean that I lose, but we can all win together).

It sounds obvious, right? But it isn't. Even when we may be givers in our personal lives, we often become matchers or takers at work. Even if the success of a giving strategy seems intuitive, it is equally intuitive that getting ahead requires receiving as much as or more than you get, spending most of your time working on things that will obviously benefit you, and not spending more time assisting others at work than getting your own stuff done. But Grant cites a growing body of research showing that giving - under the right conditions - really is the best overall 'strategy.'

Of course, I said "under the right conditions." What are those conditions? Well, for starters, one must give with some sort of purpose. Those who don't see some sort of result from their giving often burn out. (So, fundraising telemarketers burn out less when they can talk with those who their efforts have helped, and teachers burn out less when they see what their more successful students go on to do.) Also, one must give to others and things that the giver is interested in. (Volunteering for projects and to help people I care about is much easier and fun than for those I care little about.) Lastly, one must watch out not to be exploited by takers, who can often seem like givers in their agreeableness, but be exploitative in the end. (And Grant gives some good advice on how to detect real givers versus takers who are good actors.)

So, all of this is what Grant calls 'otheerish giving.' Giving selflessly versus giving a bit selfishly is, Grant writes, what ultimately separates successful from unsuccessful givers. Give, but make sure one is giving with a sense of purpose, and to people and things one cares about. Give, but not when it comes AT THE EXPENSE of one's own projects.

And this is the one area of criticism I have for Grant's otherwise well-written and VERY interesting book. He doesn't do a great job distinguishing between matchers (those who give when they think there will be something for them in return), and otherish givers (those who give selectively). .On its face, I think I have an understanding of the difference, but the ideas are very closely related.

One other small area of criticism: does it make sense to urge others to give, but then point out that giving is a good strategy to success? If one adopts giving as a strategy for success, then doesn't that mean, in a sense, that they are takers (giving because they expect to gain more than they give ultimately)? Grant warns against this tendency, telling us that giving because one expects ultimate benefits - is often a self-defeating strategy that others can detect. But, doesn't the mere fact that Grant's whole point is to show that and how giving is ultimately a winning strategy mean that many people WILL adopt it somewhat artificially because they expect a payoff? (I don't see how its avoidable.)

Anyway, I did gain a lot from this book. Not only have I found myself monitoring some of my interpersonal dealings by the advice given in this book, but it's given me insights into what working styles many of my colleagues have (which affects how I deal with them). Very good book that not only conveys some very interesting research, but should be able to give people some good and usable advice.

Oh, and as a final teaser... chapter 3 explains why Jonas Salk - typically renowned as a giver for refusing to patent his polio vaccine - is actually a taker.

How Givers Help Teams and Communities.

I'm very glad that I stumbled upon the Adam Grant's interview on the On Being radio show. This book resonated with me on many levels. There are lessons here that will help me in my roles an agile software developer, people manager, and member of my community. Grant explains how givers (as opposed to takers and matchers) get ahead in the long run and also help their teams succeed. The information here resonates with, and explains, many things I've learned from people ranging from Gerald Weinberg and Tom DeMarco to, more recently Gil Broza about technical leadership, and team dynamics. In this book you will learn how to be an effective team member, and help others to be the same. Most importantly Grant explains how to be a giver and not overextend yourself. This is was a great book to end the year with, and would be an equally good book to start the year with. As Adam Grant says, we need more givers. This book will help you to understand why that's true, how you can be a more effective giver, and how to encourage others to give, so that you can be part of a more effective team or community. This is a "business" book that will give you insights in to how to improve both your business and non-business lives.

Give and be proud

As an entrepreneur from China, I have to say this is best and most useful book I have read in the last two years! Here I am inspired to prioritize my effort in constructing my corporate culture -- recognize the individual giving tendencies of my partners and core team members before deciding how to engage their commitment to it.
I have read this book twice in the past week and have started to use the tools that it recommends to shape my own giving behaviors. Needless to say, I have already requested my core team members to read this book and we shall kick off our first study group on it at the end of this month. I intend to make it a ritual in our monthly management and strategy meeting, in the hope that our company culture will be shifted gradually in the giving direction in a top-down fashion.
By helping my colleagues and myself become otherish and sustain on it, I believe it will not only benefit our professions and our collective success, but also dramatically improve our personal relationships and life quality (especially for those of us who have long been seeking a solution to achieve the real work-life balance!).
Thank you Professor Grant for all your inspirations, as I have come to believe no matter how self-oriented we were when we first started our business, it is never too late for my team and I to train ourselves to become otherish and start doing something benefiting ourselves and the society at the same time. Determined to create a company ingrained in giving, my partners and I will make it our mission to create one of the most loving and giving companies in China.
