About the Author
Dr. Richard McLaughlin D.D.S. is one of the orthodontic industry’s foremost instructors on advanced treatment using the pre-adjusted appliance. He established his still-thriving orthodontic practice shortly after graduating from the orthodontics program at the University of Southern California. He continues to treat patients in his San Diego office, and maintains an international lecturing and teaching schedule. Dr. McLaughlin is a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics, a member of the Pacific Coast Society of Orthodontists and American Association of Orthodontists, and was recently honored with the American Board’s Dale B. Wade Award. He is the Southern California Component Director of the Edward H. Angle Society of Orthodontists, a clinical professor at USC’s department of Orthodontics, and an associate professor at St. Louis University, Department of Orthodontics. He has written more than 30 journal articles, and co-authored 4 textbooks.

Well, it's that wonderful time of year when authors we know and love give us their stories of love and romance, all wrapped up in a Christmas bow!
A Seaside Christmas by Sherryl Woods was the one I chose to read first because I can usually count on this author to give us a holiday romance to remember.

Jenny Collins has a lot going on in her life. She is a songwriter with a very successful career in Nashville, her mother has remarried and Jenny has a little brother she barely knows and the love of her life, Caleb Green was caught out with another woman and then went into rehab. For the last year, Jenny has been trying to heal her broken heart and convince herself that it's way past time she return home to Chesapeake Shores and make peace with her mother's new life by mending fences with her step-father and getting to know her little brother. So she packs her bags to come home for the holiday and agrees to help her best friend Bree with the Christmas production she is working on. Just as Jenny starts to relax, who should show up at the theater but Caleb, and he's on a mission to win Jenny back.

Caleb knows all the mistakes he's made and the biggest one by far was losing Jenny. But he's right when he figures she won't want anything to do with him. He also knows that he is going to have to convince Jenny's very large, very protective family of O'Briens that he's sorry he broke Jenny's heart and that all he wants is a second chance to prove how much he really loves her. After his first day in town, he quickly realizes that this is not going to be easy and he definitely has his work cut out for him. Being the huge country star that he is, Bree can't resist asking him to participate in the show and before she knows it, Jenny begins to weaken her resolve as Caleb works hard to prove himself. Can she really ever trust him again? Can she take the risk of another broken heart? And can she work all this out under the watchful eyes of not only her family, but the entire town?

A Seaside Christmas is a nice little story that takes place during the season of magic and it includes characters we know and love from Woods' long standing Chesapeake Shores series. Jenny spends a large part of the book trying to figure out all the relationships in her life and it wasn't long before I wished she would just let go of the past and look ahead to the future. But when push comes to shove, Caleb, with some help from a wee bit of Christmas magic turns this holiday season into one that Jenny will never forget. So kick back, grab some hot chocolate and enjoy A Seaside Christmas which will be only one of the books headed our way full of love, romance and the magic only Christmas can bring!

A sweet romance with characters I enjoyed getting to know.

n this installment of the series, Jenny Collins returns to Chesepeake Shores for the holiday season to help a family member with her annual Christmas play. She is also running away from Nashville, where she is a celebrated songwriter, trying to escape from the publicity caused by her very public breakup with Country superstar Caleb Green.

For me, a romance book has to have something other than just the romance to entice me. In the case of this book, there were several things that fit that bill. First of all, the characters in Sherryl Woods O'Brian series, if this book is any indication, encompass just he right mix of compassion, family loyalty, and pragmatism, yet they aren't at all one dimensional. Also, as a Country music fan, the country music backdrop was definitely a plus. I found myself through out the book associating both Jenny and Caleb with my favorite Country stars. Last, I loved the whole focus on the Christmas musical. I am a sucker for musicals AND Christmas musicals in particular. The fact that the author referenced all my favorite Christmas movies was not lost on me. By the time the book was finished, I not only wanted to go to Broadway and see the play, but I wanted to dig out all of my faves, White Christmas, It's a Wonderful Life, etc. and watch one after the other.

After reading this book, I have decided that I need to go back and read the other books in the series. I really want to get to know all of the O'Brians better. If the book can do that to me, I am sure it will do the same for other readers. That, in my mind, makes it a huge success.

Christmas with the family on the shore

This family saga is about Jenny Collins=her mom went and married the elder O'Brien and they had a son. She just didn't fit in but her aunt Bree talked her into coming back after years of trying other things: college and songwriting in Nashville. She had broken up a year ago with Caleb Green.
This book also follows Caleb and his life in Nashville, listening to others sing Jennie's songs. He wants to buy that song and will go to Chesapeake Shores and talk to her-something he hadn't done when they broke up.
In town everybody in the family is trying to get Jenny on board to attend the welcome home party and to make amends with her mother... She's also working with Bree on the Christmas play songs. Caleb hits town to apologize to Jenny...
Dillon, another local guy she used to play music with is divorced and wants to date her. Super surprise what her mom and step-dad give her when she's back in town, it's so perfect.
To help Bree and her new production company they agree to work together so she'll have a really good season.
Love catching up with all the families and especially during the holiday season.
Caleb's idea to decorate her yard with decorations-he gets the go ahead by Bree who in turn sends all the males to the house to help complete the job. They hope she appreciates and likes it especially the special piece he found.
He wins the males over with the lure of a benefit concert for their land and preservation ideas...
Jenny listens to how he's changed and she's seen it for herself but she has some doubts he will go back to his bad ole self ... and he does have the part where he kisses the older female in the play...til she finds out another reason he came to town...

Basic yet substantial...and quite effective....

One person asserted that only five pages are of value in this book. That might be a bit of an exaggeration. I will admit that there are so many metaphors that the author uses to get his point across. I guess I can appreciate this as I believe this book is geared toward the beginner. And in order to help a beginner understand; the use of metaphors comes in handy. I was growing a bit impatient as the book progressed. You will read through more than halfway through book before you even start any techniques. But instruction for the techniques are eventually covered and I found them to be extremely helpful.

Oddly enough, the technique that I typically use to meditate is not all that different. Pepin advises the half Lotus position but then also recommends a seated position for those of us who can't manage this position physically. I am one of those people and must sit with my feet flat on the floor. My legs go numb if I sit in any form of a lotus position for too long. In the past I have meditated by using a technique called "running energy" and it requires being seated with feet flat on the floor but with the palms up while resting on the thighs. I wonder if all the difference with Pepin's technique has to do with is bringing the placement of my hands toward the lower abdomen with one hand cupping the other (complete directions provided in the book, of course). Additionally, the placement of your middle and index finger on the three main chakras allowed me to "see" some really amazing things as far as clearing energy that isn't mine in my energy system.

I pretty much didn't start the techniques until I finished the whole book. The techniques are illustrated after reading rougly seventy percent of the book. But as he continues on with more metaphors I kinda started to feel like I lost the instruction from memory. Admittedly, I was getting a bit annoyed with it all. However, by the time you finish (at least the Kindle version, which is what I bought) you are invited to click a link that takes you to a web address in order to provide your e-mail address but also to view a demo video (which is on youtube.com). You also get acess to some very large zip files with more information. I have yet to read them but they are downloaded and waiting for me. I will provide an update later, perhaps. Providing a demo video is better than any type of written review or tyring to thumb back through my smartphone to find the illustrations and directions for the meditation I read previously (for those of you that don't know, Kindle doen't use page numbers so when you read something it can be a bit of a pain to try and go back to it since you can't reference page numbers). And yes, I do know that by providing your e-mail address that you will be solicited by Pepin's attempts to get you to buy more material. But that's no big deal as you can always opt out of them whenver you want by unsubscribing.

It seems that something as simple as changing hand placement has made my meditations reach the next level. With the technique that I used in the past I have always had my palms facing upward while resting on my knees. I feel like now that I have my hands cupped and resting at my lower abdomen that I am really channeling more energy (the prana tha the mentions) into me and I am clearing a lot of gunk in my body and chakras that simply needs to go. Pepin refers to the prana energy as "God" and that you have to ask and give permission to this energy to enter you in order to create healing. As I meditate I talk to the "prana" in a prayerful tone and ask for healing. Example, "Prana, please enter all of my lower chakras and help me cleanse and clear whatever is there that does not serve me." I carry on in this manner with my energy and body and am really feeling some shifts. Also, it really is amazing how much heat my body generates by using this technique. It's wintertime and I keep it at around sixty degrees in my place . I do this to save on energy costs; not because I like it. But after my meditating by using Pepin's technique I find myself sweating and need to remove my hat and sweatshirt.

I will say that I do disagree with one statement in his book. As far as hand/finger placement jis concerned, he says that focusing on the navel, heart and third eye chakra (2nd, 4th and 6th) is all that is necessary. I have tried it his way but have noticed that focusing on all the chakras along the spinal path has benefitted me more. I don't put my two fingers on every chakra but I do focus on directing prana into each chakra and I get a lot of clairvoyant imagery and information that is really beneficial for me.

Skim the first 50% of the book, then go panning for the gold nuggets.

Okay, okay: read the first few pages, there are a few nuggets in them. When you get tired of idiosyncratic use of words and phrases that may not fit anyone else's preferred pattern of speech, skip to 58%. You will miss out on inappropriate use of contractions, sentence fragments, and unnecessary comma placements throughout an aimless waffle of redundant chatter loosely based on the topic of meditation.

After that, the author does share GOLD. I've meditated for two decades, and never considered some of it. An example: hand posture, what some may call "mudras". I have 5 books on the subject, but never considered WHY some of it works, and the way he explained two examples was so "common sense", I marveled that I had never seen it before, and felt that half of the book's cost was worth that alone!

The author clearly knows his subject, and just as clearly has some good stuff to say. What keeps this book from being five stars is 1) the overall lack of organizational flow, and 2) the conversational tone was too loose for a non-fiction book.

However much I may or may not like the presentation, though, the "meat and vegetables" of this dish were too good not to give a decent score. Sort of like getting a 5-star restaurant to deliver their food in McDonald's wrappers.

Overall, I'm glad I read it. May the author enjoy the function of a good editor in the future!

Only about 5 pages of good information

This book contains a lot of internal inconsistencies and reads like it was written by a 13-year-old on LSD.

One big problem is that the author turns to science and scientific metaphor to explain reality, but does so without an accurate understanding of science or ANY references whatsoever. For example, the author claims that white blood cells are somehow more aware than red blood cells, which is kind of a ridiculous idea. Or, he equates "anti-matter" with evil or the devil, which is stupid. Or, that placing a sponge with red dye next to other sponges will cause the red dye to "spread like a virus." That's not true -- it would not spread exponentially like a virus, it would attenuate at each level. It may seem that I'm nitpicking, but the book is full of these faulty ideas. There's also a pseudo-scientific approach in describing benefits, such as the author claiming that one sitting position gives you 25-50% more prana than another. Making claims like this suggests that the author collected measurements, but since prana is impossible to objectively measure, this is just stupid to say. I would have accepted him saying "in my experience, this position work better" but not attaching numbers to it like this. The author would have been better of to skip the science and focus on the meditation.

There are internal inconsistencies such as on one hand the author telling you that no one can know God and on the other hand proceeding to give an entire chapter of his beliefs on God as if they were true fact. Another one is, on one hand complaining that in this culture people want the results too quick and on the other hand claiming that his approach will "make a 30 minute meditation give you as much benefit as a 5 hour mediation." There is also a lot of arrogance, such as saying that "if you think you know, you don't know anything" but then saying that "if you did know it, you'd be me" or saying that if you use an approach different from his we'd just be wasting energy and time, as if the author has somehow the only one privy to the truth.

Besides all of the internal logic problems, the book is not well written or edited. It is full of grammatical errors and reads like a high-schooler's essay. Who edited this?

But, despite all of its problems, I'd say that the book does have about 1 chapter worth of good information -- unfortunately most of it is hidden within a lot of crap. You can save yourself time by skipping the first and last chapters and focusing on the parts that talk about concrete advice for meditation such as how to sit and what to do with your mind.
