Emily Witt has written for The New Yorker, n+1, The New York Times, and the London Review of Books. She studied at Brown University, Columbia University, and the University of Cambridge and was a Fulbright Scholar in Mozambique. She grew up in Minneapolis and lives in Brooklyn.

Author Likes her sexual "Research"

In this book, the author, Emily Witt, takes the readers on a ride through a variety of sexual adventures in her examination of possible connections between individuals, couples, and groups. She swings through internet dating, exotic destinations (“Burning Man”), one-on-one “Orgasmic Meditation” sessions, interacting (where viewers can comment and communicate with the subject) internet porn sites, and a few other avant-garde arrangements. But Witt prepares for the writing of this book by participating: She does the sexual meditation with a stranger (“you don't even have to like him” to enjoy it), attends the kinky sexual freedom events and otherwise travels with individuals engaged in such alternative sexual lifestyles. Witt hears and feels what the players do. However, like the undercover agent who penetrates a clandestine criminal operation, she appears to like her research too much and may have lost some objectivity). In some ways, the book serves to reexamine and contrast traditional monogamous lifestyles (where couples meet, marry, have kids and live in houses with white picket fences) to a broad range of alternatives. At the end of the book, she gets serious about the lack of improvements that have occurred in birth control technology. I liked the book.

the word love appears over and over and over

A very bizarre book that was informative, interesting, and well-written. It doesn't have much to do with the future of sex, but it captures the anarchy, chaos, and variety of the past 30 years up to the present. In fairness, it's an exploration of the outer edges, and folks (like myself) who live in "flyover country" may have trouble grasping the big picture -- if there is one. One quibble is that amid all the craziness, the word love appears over and over and over. It's never really defined, and, in a book otherwise off the handle, a definition of what Miss Witt means by "love" is needed. Perhaps it's characteristic of the circles in which she travels, but a lot of the sex seems disconnected from the rest of each person's personalities, giving the impression that sexuality isn't grounded in and reflective of anything deeper. I'll let the reader decide.

Interesting book about some types of sexual activities people are currently experiencing.

An easy to read and interesting book about the authors observations of some people's expressions of their sexuality and relationships. The author does include some of her own experiences. I enjoyed reading the book.
