  An Asian Strategist's View of Future Globalization

  Whenever I meet top corporate strategists for the first time, Kenichi Ohmae's books always come up. Someone will ask, "Which one do you like best?" With The Next Global Stage, my answer has changed to this book. For those who want a more conceptual version of The World Is Flat that applies to future company and government decisions, The Next Global Stage is a good choice.
  
  Mr. Ohmae makes several important arguments that will stimulate your mind for years to come.
  
  1. Business decisions must be considered in terms of four dimensions in today's borderless world: communications, capital, corporations and consumers. This new perspective replaces his famous three c's in The Mind of the Strategist (competitors, the company and consumers).
  
  2. The proper geographical entity to consider for decision making is a region rather than a nation state or a trading bloc. Such an entity will usually have at least 10 million people in it and will usually be part of a country.
  
  3. Competitiveness is enhanced by expanding up and adding more common platforms (such as Windows, the Web, English, credit card systems, influential paradigms, and parallel educational backgrounds) whether as a company or as a geographical region.
  
  4. Paradigms for making national political and economic policy are obsolete because they do not encompass solutions and money flows involving other countries. The new reality is here, but the paradigms to address the reality are not.
  
  5. The borderless world has changed the tasks of political and business leaders in ways that most leaders are ignoring to their peril.
  
  The book is enriched by a variety of perspectives involving geographic regions and countries that have prospered where success could not be assumed (such as companies in Sweden, Finland, Singapore, Dalian in China, the Multimedia Super Corridor in Malaysia, and Ireland) and which regions have the potential to become such prosperity centers in the future (especially in Asia and the Baltic). Mr. Ohmae is a strategist . . . and also an entrepreneur. His examples of own businesses enliven and illuminate his points in ways that considering Dell cannot do alone.
  
  Regional politicians and CEOs will find that they can use this book to help decide which questions and issues they should be addressing. Although it's not clear what exactly has to be done, the result will be more agile responses in terms of amending business and political models to fit the shifting environments than would otherwise occur. As someone who advocates continuing business innovation in The Ultimate Competitive Advantage, I was pleased to see that Mr. Ohmae reaches the same conclusion in The Next Global Stage.
  
  For those in Europe and the United States who are new to thinking about global competition and global supply chains, this book will be an essential primer to help acquire the insights needed to prosper over the next decade.

  The Next Best Seller

  The first thing I noticed about this book were the actual words and sentence structure. I do not want to make too much out of it, but you can tell that the author is not a native westerner. This made the book more enjoyable for me because of the sing song way the author writes. Now on to the book. One could argue that the world has changed more in the last 20 years then ever before and it is due to or has caused what we call globalization. Everything is changing and at a much faster pace then most of us would like. This book takes a good look at how business and individuals can take advantage of or at least be prepared for even further globalization.
  
  The book starts by taking a look at the current state of the world and how we fit into it. The author talks to us about the areas of the world that are exploding as well as the overall global economy. The author then explores what major trends are taking place in the global economy. He ends the book with a review of how the trends he covered will change nations governments. Overall it is a very interesting and well written book. I felt I was learning something new on each page. The only minor criticism I would have is that the author did seem to be very confident in him self to the point of being a bit arrogant. The book is well worth your time if you are interested in the global economy.

  Barriers coming down

  This book was a pleasant surprise. The author argues that economic theories have become outdated by our new realities, especially technology and international outsourcing. The information about specific economies, such as Finland's, is fascinating. The author's Japanese background forces Americans (like me) to recognize a new perspective.
  
  I related to this book because I work via computer from a small town in southern New Mexico. I do business with people I will never see and take receipts (via credit card) from all over the world. So I live the society Ohmae writes about (except that he needs to revise his belief about technololgical aptitude of the over-40 set).
  
  Ohmae is best when he's discussing global strategies on a broad, conceptual level. When it comes to implementation, the discussion gets fuzzier. For instance, it's hard to imagine any government voluntarily changing, especially in terms of giving up power.
  
  And while new leaders need to be trained in analytical thinking, our current educational system seems to be moving to rote memory, tested by exams. While borders may be coming down, security measures are going up.
  
  I was also a little puzzled by Ohmae's discussion of distance learning. He's right: mainstream universities in the US have tended to regard distance learning as an unwanted stepchild. Yet he fails to observe that "alternative" universities have seized the opportunity to attract working adults with money and motivation. The quality of these non-traditional options can vary a great deal -- perhaps an example of a market failure.
  
  I believe this book should be read in conjunction with another Wharton business book, Power of Impossible Thinking. Ohmae introduces a new mental model: a world where borders disappear as we use ATMs and buy through credit cards. Yet (as Wind et al point out) some paradigm shifts are two-way streets: many institutions continue to retain old-fashioned gateways.
  
  For instance, in the US, we still have archaic state borders that make little sense today. There's a certain irony when the term "long distance call" has lost meaning, but if we move across a state line, we need new health insurance.
  
  In a more amusing example, I was offered a part-time job where I'd be working from home, over a thousand miles from the institution, communicating over the Internet. The company sent complex forms that had to be completed by hand (lots of little square boxes) and also a form to sign, promising I would bring no illegal drugs to the workplace. I do not use drugs but I wondered, "Does this mean no catnip for the cats in the room I use for my office? What does 'the workplace' mean when you're telecommuting?"
  
  I didn't pursue the job ...but after reading both this book and Power of Impossible Thinking (Wind et al.) I realized I was caught up in a conflict of mental models created by the Next Global Stage.

Having just finished this, I must say that I'm sort of speechless. I'm not exactly sure what to say about this book. However, it's been a long time since I've felt the desire to stick with a story in one go and even longer since I've finished a book this long (82k+) in only a day.

With that said, there are a lot of warnings that should come with this book. For one, there is no romance in this one. In fact, I'd be hard pressed to even call it a gay novel because the main character is more asexual than anything. There are 'suggestions' and 'impressions' that this could turn into a gay romance but that could also be taken as the MCs just getting violent. But to those readers thinking they're picking up a young adult, new adult, whatever you want to call it, romance, you'll be sadly disappointed.

That out of the way, I'm extremely glad I read this. It might not be romance or m/m but I adored the characters and the journey I took with them. They're intense to say the least, psychotic and likely to fly off the handle bars but there was something about them that made me want to continue reading and find out where things were going. While I wouldn't say there's a huge cast of characters, there are more than the typical couple and a few side characters. The main contenders here are three guys: Neil, Andrew and Kevin. Neil is an asexual (kinda) who just wants to play Exy (which is like a sport that mixes lacrosse and ice hockey). He's a frightened kid but knows how crucial it is to lie low for fear of his father discovering where he is. Kevin is difficult to explain. He's mean and criticizes everything about Neil but at the same time, he's this lost soul who's been dealt just as crappy a hand as Neil has. Andrew is... psychotic. It's the only way to describe him. I don't understand how he became this way but he's got nothing to lose and he acts on that. He's five foot nothing but he's not afraid of staring down giants. He's amazing but scary and willing to keep everyone who he deems 'family' safe and right now that is Kevin.

The story follows Neil along as he gets accustomed to living in such an open place and playing the sport he loves. Immediately he has issues with Andrew and his gang (who are Neil's teammates) that makes his life difficult but he loves Exy enough to put up with the hostility from everyone. It's about the trials that Neil has to go through, the panic and fear he always has about being found out and being hunted again and the consequences he has to deal with when he makes his decisions regarding whether to stay or to run.

The only thing I didn't like about this book (aside from the lack of m/m romance, of course!) was how confused I was at times. The beginning will be hard to get through for some people because you're left wondering what is going on. You don't get the full back story for Neil or Kevin or even Andrew that really makes sense until well into the book so you're left wondering and probably saying WTF multiple times.

I feel that I should warn readers that this isn't exactly about the mafia either. While there's an undertone of it and even the threat of a yakuza pride descending on Neil and Kevin, it's not actually shown or very prominent in the story. Given that, I didn't much mind this because I felt like the whole book was focusing on second chances and Neil finally living a life, finding a home and standing up to his past. To do that, he needs Andrew and Andrew is willing to help him because of Kevin. It sort of seems like a love triangle but, like I said, this isn't romance. It is more of a bonding between these characters over a common issue.

To be honest, it's hard to explain this whole book because so much happens and is revealed that would spoiler the whole story if told. So, I'm going to leave it here. I enjoyed the novel. It has its issues but I found the whole thing fascinating and couldn't put the book down once I started. I liked that it wasn't saturated in sex but focused on such broken, and in Andrew's case, frightening characters. These characters are misfits, pure and simple and their attitudes and aggressions show that. It's a book of deceit, loyalty, dangerous situations and trust. It's not your traditional story but a gripping tale nonetheless and I'm really looking forward to seeing where the series goes from here and seriously how there's some m/m romance in the near future for Neil and Andrew!!

Seriously, if you want originality, flawed awesome characters, suspense... you have to read this one.

Initially, skeptical after lately reading writers who barely could sustain my attention. I was caught off guard on this one. Usually, an author starts out well and finishes poorly or somewhere in between. Nora Sakavic has the uncanny talent to not let up and keep you totally absorbed in her simple yet complex tale.

Now, this is the type of work that goes beyond just a yarn about love interests. It delves deeply into various characters, damaged lives, malignant forces and unanswered questions . There's a connection with her creations. For me , this is a sign of a great writer who enchants the reader. I believe this author is on the level of writers such as TJ Klune, Scott Sherman, C.S Pacat. Admittedly, the genre is different but the ability to thoroughly engage the reader is the key.

Look , this is just a good story. It does have a gay character and questions about our main protagonist's preferences. However, it's not the primary story line. Don't look for erotic interludes here. However, if you are really looking for an entertaining, absorbing, suspenseful work look no further. Really, I doubt you will regret reading this one. I'm on my way to the next book. BTW some things are great even though inexpensive.

Love this intricate story - rare five star review

As I write this review, I've just finished the first two books of the ALL FOR THE GAME trilogy - and they're both excellent. Main and sub-characters are extremely well developed, and continue to grow through the series.

This is a story about a varied group of young adults (college age) who had somewhat (to horrifically) broken childhoods. They're misfits who are brought together through a sport, while continuing to encounter setbacks. As the relationships between the characters evolve, we slowly learn more about their past and how it has brought them to where they are.

The first two books contain several gay characters, but no M/M romance and no erotica of any type.

The two initial books are full-sized novels; presumably the third will be as well:
The Foxhole Court - 4058 locations
The Raven King - 5035 locations

The final book in the trilogy, The King's Men, is expected to be released in January, 2014 (according to a blog post by the author on Nov 15, 2013). These are not standalone books - readers will want to read them all, in order.

I complain a lot about eBook prices; this may be the first time I've ever suggested a price.increase. I purchased book one for free, and book two for $0.99. This seems too low given the high quality of the writing and story. Perhaps maintain the free price for book one, but sell books 2 and 3 for $3.99 or $4.99. I would happily pay that amount in return for this author's fine work.

An excellent supplement

This book is an excellent supplement to a history or political science textbook; it has 13 short chapters, each with a somewhat detailed look at one specific example of our political system in action. It is quite readable, in addition to being quite informative, and gives a reasonably unbiased look at many aspects of politics in our country. It wouldn't be very useful as a primer or as a primary textbook, but as a supplement, it is excellent.

According to photographer Anthony Snowdon, a viewer, when looking at a picture, should not be able to tell who the photographer was. That may be true about his own photographs; he was wrong, however, when it comes to the work of Richard Avedon. Many of his photographs are instantly recognizable as uniquely his or the shots of someone imitating him. Mr. Avedon gave the world the portrait where the subject, often powerful and famous-- although that is not the case in his series "In The American West" when he shot unknowns-- is photographed looking straight into the camera without flattering lighting or camera angles before a white background. These models rarely smile although Janis Joplin and Willem de Kooning are two exceptions.

This latest collection of approximately 200 of Avedon's photographs is the catalogue that accompanies a traveling exhibit of the master photographer, which began at Denmark's Louisiana Museum of Modern Art and will close in San Francisco's Museum of Modern Art. It must have been a difficult assignment to select the images that are reproduced (so beautifully) here. Many of Avedon's most famous photographs are included although there were some that I had never seen before and some I missed seeing. (For example, I would have included the magnificent shot of Tina Turner that usually fills a museum wall when it is exhibited.) The one color photograph by Avedon here is the famous or infamous, depending on your point of view, of Nastssja Kinski and the Serpent (1981). Several fashion shots are included. My favorites are the two of the model Dovima-- with the elephants in 1955 and in front of the pyramids in Eqypt in 1951.

The photograph of Peter Orlovsky and Allen Ginsberg, naked and embracing, that was-- I believe-- the cover for an issue of "Evergreen" magazine in 1963 made the cut, as did Andy Warhol and members of the Factory (1969). Some of my favorites, although I cannot always say why, are the shot of Bob Dylan taken in 1963 where he looks to be about 13, (I think it is the tilt of his head that intrigues me) W. H. Auden standing in the snow in New York in 1960 and The Generals of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Photography doesn't get better than that shot.

Avedon always said that he just photographed the surface and that the viewer only gets whatever the photographer sees in a brief moment of time. He contended also that the photograph usually tells you more about the photographer than the subject. On the other hand, the writer Albert Camus said that we are all responsible for our faces after the age of forty. Some of these portraits cry out with Camus' message. I would nominate the image of Truman Capote (1974). The word "dissipated" comes to mind immediately. Contrast the Capote photograph with, say, those of the Dalai Lama and Salman Rushdie, from whom a sense of peace emanates. It is poetic justice that the artist Francis Bacon's own face takes on the grotesque shape of many of the faces in his paintings. The Duke and Duchess of Windsor (1957), looking into Avedon's lens, would make you believe that the rest of the Royals were right about them, that they were dreadful people.

Accompanying this great photography collection are essays by several writers and art and photography critics assessing Mr. Avedon's contribution to 20th century photography including Helle Crenzien, Geoff Dyer, Judith Thurman, Michael Juul Holm, Rune Gade, Jeffrey Fraenkel and Christoph Ribbat. If you do not read all the essays, do not miss Geoff Dyer's discussion on what has become Avedon's signature, the portraits where the models are in front of a stark white background where the people who posed for him, if not known to the public before they sat for him, were famous thereafter. The people included in In the American West series-- drifters, waitresses, coal miners, truckers-- are every bit as engaging as those of the rich and famous and are now just as immortal.

Engineering design is the set of activities that lead to the manufacture of exciting new products such as aircraft, automobiles, home appliances, and hand tools as well as the construction of new facilities such as refineries, steel mills, and food processing plants. It is a pursuit that challenges our analytical abilities and our knowledge of mathematics, the sciences, and manufacturing to find solutions that work better, last longer, and are easy to maintain or repair. Just as important, however, is that engineering design is fulfilling and personally satisfying in that we can use our creative abilities to develop ideas, that they become real, and that they meet the needs of our fellow human beings.

This text is for students at the undergraduate or first-year graduate level. It is for design and nondesign faculty who wish to learn more about modern design concepts and methods. It is for practicing engineers who wish to enhance their knowledge and skills. The book is not a comprehensive, intellectual report of engineering design research. Rather, the text is a practical, down-to-earth presentation of engineering design integrating topics about the business of manufacturing. It draws upon the author's engineering and managerial experiences at organizations such as General Electric, Fisher Price Toys, Wurlitzer, and the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority. Preliminary versions of the text have been successful in semester-long design courses that include team-based design projects.

This book brings together the best design methods and practices in a consistent, clear, and orderly presentation. Readers are introduced to concepts and methods developed by the best engineering design authors in the world including Dixon and Poli, Dieter, Otto and Wood, Pahl and Beitz, and Ullman. Using a "just-in-time" philosophy of learning, topics are presented in an orderly fashion, progressively building design methods and terminology. The topics are presented and used, rather than stored away for use at a later date. Exercises at the end of each chapter use the knowledge and methods presented. The voice of the customer is interwoven in chapters on design problem formulation and includes using customer satisfaction measures to evaluate design alternatives. The subject of human factors is presented along with tables and illustrations in such detail so as to provide the reader with the necessary tools for preparing preliminary designs that incorporate human abilities and limitations. One of the most important book on neurology in a decade.

For young research scientists who are interested in understanding the dynamics of the human brain, Koch's book provides the ideal introduction. Written in a precise yet easy style, the 21 Chapters of "Biophysics of Computation" begin at the beginning, introducing the reader to elementary electrical properties of membrane patches, linear cable theory, and the properties of passive dendritic trees. These introductory chapters are followed by two on the properties of synapses and the various ways that synapses can interact to perform logic on passive dendritic trees. Then the Hodgkin--Huxley formulation is discussed in detail, and various simplifying models are presented. As a basis for the Hodgkin--Huxley description, our present understanding of ionic channels is reviewed and the importance of calcium currents is emphasized. Further chapters discuss linearization of the H--H equations for small amplitude analysis, a careful examination of ionic diffusion, electrochemical properties of dendritic spines, synaptic plasticity, simple neural models, stochastic neural models. and the properties of bursting cells. Just about every facet of current neural knowledge is touched upon, with appropriate references to a carefully selected bibliography which will help the diligent novice delve deeply into whatever aspect of neural information processing that he or she chooses.
All of the above comprises an extended introduction to Chapters 17 through 19, which in the words of the author: "synthesize the previously learned lessons into a complete account of the events occuring in realistic dendritic trees with all of their attendant nonlinearities. We will see that dendrites can indeed be very powerful, nontraditional computational devices, implementing a number of continuous operations."
Thus "Biophysics of Computation" offers a definitive statement for the direction in which the neural research of the new century should go. Chapter 20, the penultimate, discussed several speculations for non-neural computation in the brain, ranging from molecular computing below the level of a single neuron to the effects of chemical diffusants (nitric oxide, calcium ions, carbon monoxide, etc.) on large numbers of neurons. Although this entire area has been neglected by the neuroscience community, Koch points out that there are no good reasons for doing so.
Finally, in the summary of Chapter 21, seven problems for future research projects are listed, emphasizing that the study of information processing in single neurons is very much a work in progress.

Excellent look at Neurophysics and Computatinal Processes of Neurons

I am still about 1 half a year away from having all of the math and biology needed to understand ALL of this book, but it's descriptions of single-unit computational processes are clear and easy to parse even without a the additional math and biology.

That said, this IS a book for professionals and students of Computational Neuroscience. It is not intended for a lay audience.
