My family loves Leonard Cohen. He such a great song writer and singer. His music soothes me and makes me think. He has so much symbolism and stories pored into everything he does. This book is very interesting and I am buying it for my Dad for Father's Day. I don't think he has this one and it is often sold out! If he does have it, I will keep it. I love it.

Featured Recipe from True Brews Ginger Ale

Makes about 8 cups

Ingredients

• 2-inch piece fresh ginger root
• 1 cup water, plus more to fill the bottles
• 9 tablespoons / 4 ounces white granulated sugar, plus more if needed
• 1⁄8 teaspoon salt
• 5 tablespoons freshly squeezed lemon juice (from 2 to 3 lemons), plus more if needed
• 1⁄8 teaspoon dry champagne yeast
• Peel and finely grate the ginger (I use a Microplane). You should have about 2 tablespoons of grated ginger root.

Directions

Bring the water to a boil in a small saucepan on the stove top or in the microwave. Remove from the heat. Add the sugar and salt and stir to dissolve. Add the ginger and let stand until cool. Stir in the lemon juice.

Pour the ginger water into a clean 2-liter bottle using a funnel. Do not strain out the ginger. Top off the bottle with water, leaving at least 1 inch of headspace. Give it a taste and add more lemon juice or sugar if desired. The extra sugar will dissolve on its own.

Add the yeast. Screw on the cap and shake the bottle to dissolve and distribute the yeast. Let the bottle sit at room temperature out of direct sunlight until carbonated, typically 12 to 48 hours, depending on the temperature of the room. Check the bottle periodically; when it feels rock solid with very little give, it’s ready.

Refrigerate overnight or for up to 2 weeks. Open very slowly over a sink to release the pressure gradually and avoid bubble-ups. Pour the soda through a small fine-mesh strainer to catch the ginger as you pour.

Featured Recipe from True Brews Cloudy Cherry Sake

Makes 1 gallon

Ingredients

• 1 1⁄2 pounds fresh or frozen sweet cherries
• 1 gallon dechlorinated water (see page 14)
• 1 Campden tablet
• 10 cups / 5 pounds short-grain rice
• 2 1⁄2 cups / 11⁄4 pounds koji rice (page 146, or see Resources, page 176)
• 1 teaspoon yeast nutrient
• 1⁄2 teaspoon acid blend
• 1⁄2 teaspoon pectic enzyme
• 1 1⁄2 tablespoons (1/2 tube) liquid sake or lager yeast, or 2 teaspoons (1 packet) white wine yeast

Directions

Starting 24 hours before you plan to brew, sanitize a 2-gallon bucket, its lid, the air lock, and a spoon for stirring.

Pit and coarsely chop the cherries. Combine the cherries with the water in the bucket. Crush the Campden tablet and stir it in. Snap on the lid and attach the air lock. Wait 24 hours for the Campden to sterilize the cherries.

The next day, soak, steam, and cool rice as described on page 140. Add the steamed rice, koji rice, yeast nutrient, acid blend, pectic enzyme, and yeast to the bucket with the cherries. (If you are steaming your rice in batches, combine everything with the first batch and add the remaining rice to the fermenter as it is cooled and ready.) Stir vigorously to distribute the yeast and aerate the rice mash.

Snap on the lid and attach the air lock. Store the sake somewhere cool and dark, ideally around 55°F. You should see active fermentation as evidenced by bubbles in the air lock within 48 hours. Ferment the sake for 2 weeks, stirring daily with a sanitized spoon.

To finish the sake, sanitize a strainer, flour sack towel, stockpot, funnel, a 1-gallon jug, and its stopper.

First, pour the sake through the strainer into the stockpot. Discard all the rice and cherry solids. Set the funnel in the 1-gallon jug and line it with the flour sack towel. Strain the sake again, this time into the jug. Because of all the rice sediment, this can take a while. Stir the liquid in the funnel frequently to prevent the sediment from compacting and slowing down the straining. If the flour sack towel becomes clogged, rinse it out, sanitize it, and replace.

Clean the stockpot. Set the jug of sake, uncovered, inside the pot and fill the pot with water until the water is level with the surface of the sake. Set the pot over medium heat. Warm the sake to 140°F to pasteurize the sake and stop the koji and yeast activity (this does not affect the alcohol content). Allow the sake to cool.

To bottle the sake, sanitize ten 12-ounce bottles or six 22-ounce bottles (or five 750-milliliter wine bottles), their caps (or corks), the siphon hose, the racking cane, its tip, and the bottle filler. Shake the jug of sake to make sure the sediment is fully suspended in the sake during bottling. Siphon the sake into the bottles, shaking the jug again if the sediment begins to settle. Cap (or cork) the bottles and label.

Sake can be drunk immediately or aged for up to 1 year. Shake the bottles before serving and serve chilled.

I just adore this book

I bought this book primarily to make soda since I already make kefir at home and as far as kombucha goes.. I just can't with the SCOBY. It's too... gelatinous for me.
Anyway, the very first thing I did was to make the watermelon mint soda. WORTH IT. Oh My Gawd. I'm hooked.. some of these methods are too involved for me, like the sake, but I'm very interested in brewing mead and hard lemonade.

My favorite bit about this book is that everything is small batches. You get to dip your toe into brewing without a huge investment. My first batch of soda was made in the recommended washed out two liter bottle. Less than a dollar for champagne yeast, a watermelon and some mint from my garden and I was all set to make the best soda ever in the world.

Emma gives you a basic recipe/method for each thing to make.. a Master recipe, if you will. I'm already dreaming of the different kinds of soda I can make with this new information.

I'm also looking forward to making hard cider as soon as it's apple season.

UPDATE: 02/08/14:

Well, I have a SCOBY because someone sent me one... and let me tell you, it's totally awesome once you get past the "omg whut is this?" factor. I have made the blackberry sage kombucha and it's totally one of my favorites. I've also made the pear water kefir.. DELISH. I'm currently working on the Sweet Mulled Cider.. I'm adding the yeast tomorrow.. it'll be a long wait but it will be ready in October.

For over twenty-five years, Margaret Fish has been providing speech and language services to children. This is a must... jumps to the heart of treatment!!!

This isn't a feel good book. It's a manual on how to treat apraxia. I've read and flipped through many books, but this one is by far my favorite. Now it could be that it's because I like to roll my sleeves up and get involved with my son's therapy. It's been so helpful, actually invaluable, to me in making activities for him at home and understanding where he's at in therapy and its progress or lack there of.

I also love this book because it has so many different approaches. Some work, some don't. I can give suggestions to his therapist (as they seem to prefer one particular style over the other ones). It also covers the progress of therapy so I feel I have a good roadmap when things start to change.

It is a big book and will take time to digest. I suggest reading it in small doses maybe 10 page increments so that what it's saying sinks in. There's enough material on the description and stories online, but this bridges the gap and explains how to help you child... and that is EVERYTHING I wanted to do.

This is the best book out there and I've read all of them in the last few years!
If you are not able to travel to the conferences, this book has summarized the information you need to know and use without having to spend time and money traveling....it's a great book for the new therapist but also for the those who are more experience to add to their ideas and skill set.

I work with many students who are diagnosed with CAS daily and have been an SLP for a decade and a half. I still reference this book frequently. It's well written, easy to access specific info you may want for a particular client, and is written in clear enough terms that it's appropriate to share with families.

Hoot Loudly and Swing a Big Stick

What, no reviews for a book which emerged from a tiny small press collective to become an American Book Award winner? Griever is a delight, a postmodern absurdist melange which offers a scathing indictment of suppression of human rights in China, and, more broadly, government and individual hypocrisy and the manner in which both big business and big government degrade human experience. Vizenor uses the common thread of the trickster in Native American and Chinese culture to present a fantasized version of his travels to China on an academic exchange program. He becomes a trickster Monkey King and all sorts of hell breaks loose. You can bet that the Chinese government will not be inviting Vizenor back soon, but I invite you to read Griever. It's a hoot! For Native American AND Asian American literature buffs

Vizenor's book examines the interesting question of cultural parallelism, as he explores the similarities between Native American trickster traditions and the Chinese Monkey King tradition. Vizenor creates a wonderful double structure in which Griever's "Journey to the West" has two components--a Native American journey and a Chinese journey--and therefore requires that all the analogies to the Chinese Monkey tradition take two different forms--one for Griever and one for his Chinese colleagues. Fans of Journey to the West or Monkey should be interested in how he re-interprets these characters in light of the modern re-colonization of China by the West, while fans of Native American literature will enjoy seeing how he connects his own Indian tradition to its Chinese analogue.

About the Author
Alfredo Hoyos, MD, is a board-certified Plastic Surgeon from Bogotá, Colombia. He undertook his medical training at Rosario University and subsequently specialized in plastic surgery. Dr. Hoyos is the inventor of high-definition liposculpture (HDL) and other advanced body contouring techniques. Making use of cutting-edge VASER technology, he designed VASER Hi-Definition Lipoplasty (VHD), which produces a high muscle definition in both men and women. The style of this book surpasses anything that Mr. Bradshaw has written. In other words, although his other books are nice, his writing style is not fluent. He must have had help perhaps, but this one flows fluently. The quality of the material is earth shattering. Very few books have I read from cover to cover within a week and this one I did. This is something I can go over and over.

Creating the love you want

I have not read all of this but what I have read is very helpful about understanding dynamics of why we continue to live our lives in the past, though we may not know it. He is coming from a place of exposing the shame element and people who come from or understand the 12 step programs will recognize his way of demystifying pain and shame. He is a gentle caring soul who really wants us to understand and reveal ourselves TO ourselves and then be able to move on.

John Bradshaw's literature has been a real help to me. I enjoy his theories and his style of writing. He doesn't overload you with concepts, but really breaks things down and keeps them simple. I recommend this book to anyone, no matter your situation...it will help.

An annual essential for me.

I've used this for years to track the void-of-course moon. You don't want to start anything new during the VOC moon, and purchases made during that time rarely work out for you as planned. The VOC happens for a few minutes to seveeral hours between when the moon makes its last major contact with another planet until it goes into the next sign. During this time it's best to just hang loose, kick back and take things easy.

And of course, it's excellent for looking up other astrological goings-on -- the phase of the moon, new moon, retrogrades, etc., etc. Nice little day planner format too.

Companies and other organizations depend more than ever on the availability of their Information Technology, and most mission critical business processes are IT-based processes. Business continuity is the ability to do business under any circumstances and is an essential requirement modern companies are facing. High availability and disaster recovery are contributions of the IT to fulfill this requirement. And companies will be confronted with such demands to an even greater extent in the future, since their credit ratings will be lower without such precautions.

Both, high availability and disaster recovery,  are realized by redundant systems. Redundancy can and should be implemented on different abstraction levels: from the hardware, the operating system and middleware components up to the backup computing center in case of a disaster. This book presents requirements, concepts, and realizations of redundant systems on all abstraction levels, and all given examples refer to UNIX and Linux systems.

Great Book!

My orginal DR guide was lost in a basement flood, I was looking for a replacement for my desk libary at work. There was some math (statistics)on availablity / reliablity that was a little hard to follow - my college math is quite rusty, but it was nicly summerized in a graph format, so I could follow it. The network and data center sections are very well done.

Conceptually very good, Methodology too

This is my first book about this matter. Although I have some experience implementing solution with HA/DR requirements, this book was very clarifier. Topics are conceptually clear and also this proposes a good methodology to face HA/DR requirements.

You will get some technical details about components that allow implement HA/DR, however it is not in deep. Don't think you will get a comercial product review. This is not the target.

It is a very good book.
