He first explains the concept of "mystification"--a type of identity confusion rooted in the "defective love" encouraged by our culture and passed along by even the best-intentioned parents. Then he suggests how to replace it with "soulful" love, which remains grounded in reality but also calls the creative spirit into play. Borrowing from 12-step programs, transactional analysis and conventional psychology as well as theology, Bradshaw outlines a four-step program to overcome the "trance" that perpetuates mystification. Best yet

The style of this book surpasses anything that Mr. Bradshaw has written. In other words, although his other books are nice, his writing style is not fluent. He must have had help perhaps, but this one flows fluently. The quality of the material is earth shattering. Very few books have I read from cover to cover within a week and this one I did. This is something I can go over and over.

Creating the love you want

I have not read all of this but what I have read is very helpful about understanding dynamics of why we continue to live our lives in the past, though we may not know it. He is coming from a place of exposing the shame element and people who come from or understand the 12 step programs will recognize his way of demystifying pain and shame. He is a gentle caring soul who really wants us to understand and reveal ourselves TO ourselves and then be able to move on.

LOVE it

John Bradshaw's literature has been a real help to me. I enjoy his theories and his style of writing. He doesn't overload you with concepts, but really breaks things down and keeps them simple. I recommend this book to anyone, no matter your situation...it will help.
